On 27 April 2025, Komodo Lounge took its hookah team from Bucharest to the Hookah Battle Europe Cup at ShishaMesse in Frankfurt. It was the only team from Romania in the field. Hookah Battle is an international hookah-making competition that has been running since 2011. Its Europe Cup puts lounges, shops and brands from across Europe and beyond on the same stage, in front of the same jury and under the same rules.

This page records what the competition is, how it is judged, who was in the line-up and what it has to do with the shisha served in Floreasca. Every fact here can be checked against the organiser's own records, linked at the end.

What Hookah Battle is

Hookah Battle has been running hookah-making competitions around the world since 2011. Its stated aim is to develop hookah culture and get different national hookah schools learning from each other. In practice that means a Russian lounge, a Californian shop and a Chinese brand end up preparing hookahs a few metres apart and being judged by the same people.

Its international format, called the Classic Hookah Battle, is held at hookah trade fairs, festivals and conferences. Under the league's published rules, 8 to 20 teams of one to three people compete, and each team represents a lounge, shop, manufacturer or blog. One set of rules is used in every country, so a team from Bucharest competes on exactly the same terms as the host nation's teams.

How a hookah is judged

Each team prepares a hookah and presents it to the jury on stage. The judges score it on four criteria:

A second prize is decided by the audience. Visitors can taste every team's hookah at its table and vote for their favourite.

The 2025 Europe Cup line-up

The 2025 edition was held on the last day of ShishaMesse, a three-day hookah trade fair in Frankfurt with one trade day and two public days. According to the official event page, 14 teams were registered:

The event page names Hedonic Exit, Metalcore Shisha and Burley as the winners. Both German podium teams were competing a short drive from home.

Why we went

In our profile on the Hookah Battle site, we described the event as a chance to bring our Bali-inspired lounge culture to an international audience. That is still the honest answer. A lounge can call its shisha "the best in Bucharest" without anyone checking. On a competition stage, a jury of experienced judges scores the same four things for every team, with no house advantage.

Taking part also earned Komodo Lounge the league's Traveler achievement, which is awarded for competing at a Battle outside your own country. It is shown on our Hookah Battle brand profile.

What it means for the shisha at your table

The jury's four criteria are the same ones a guest notices without naming them. A shisha that tastes burnt after twenty minutes has a taste problem. One that needs hard pulling has a draw problem. One that produces thin, wispy smoke disappoints however good the flavour. Preparing for a stage where those three are scored side by side with a dozen other teams makes a hookah team stricter about packing, heat management and mix ratios, every night and not only on competition day.

Presentation is the fourth criterion. In Floreasca it is the tableside ritual: fruit bowls, cocktail vases and a shisha master who prepares and tends the hookah at your table. Our shisha price guide covers what each option costs, from the classic at 150 lei to the premium fruit bowl at 350 lei.

Looking for the best hookah in Bucharest?

If you want to judge a Bucharest lounge the way a Hookah Battle jury would, order one shisha and give it forty minutes. Note whether the flavour holds, whether the smoke stays thick and whether the draw stays easy. Our guide to the best shisha in Bucharest covers the other things to check, from booking to atmosphere.

Komodo Lounge Floreasca is at Calea Floreasca 60 and is open daily from 12:00 to 04:00. Our second venue, Komodo Rooftop Old Town, is a heated terrace one floor above Strada Șelari in the historic centre.
