New Year's Eve in Bucharest is unusually flexible. The city does not push everyone toward the same public-square spectacle the way Vienna or Lisbon do — there are fireworks, but the night is built around private dinners, lounge tables and a slow march to midnight. Which means the question is less "where is the event" and more "what kind of evening do you want to remember."
This guide is for anyone choosing now where to spend NYE 2026 in Bucharest. We have written it in May so you have time to book — the better venues lock in reservations well before December.
Book by November
Bucharest's NYE reservation calendar opens earlier than most expect. The strongest restaurants — the hotel ballrooms, the modern tasting rooms, the popular Old Town venues — start taking December 31 bookings in September. By mid-November, the obvious choices are full.
If you are reading this in spring or summer, you are early. If you are reading this in November, you are on time. If you are reading this in mid-December, you are doing it the hard way and will need to accept whatever is left.
The three NYE evenings in Bucharest
Most NYE plans in the city fall into one of three shapes. Pick the shape first; the venue follows.
1 · The early dinner option
You book a long, seated dinner that starts around 19:00 or 20:00 and runs through midnight. The restaurant is the entire evening. You toast at the table, watch fireworks from a window or a terrace, then go home or to one quiet drink afterwards.
This is the calmest, most controllable kind of NYE — and the one that fills up first. The hotel ballrooms (JW Marriott, Athenee Palace Hilton, InterContinental) all run formal NYE dinners with live music. The modern tasting restaurants (Kaiamo, The Artist) run shorter, more food-led NYE menus. Expect 600 to 1,500 RON per person at the higher end.
2 · The full-night route
You have an earlier dinner, head somewhere to be in a crowd at midnight, and continue into the early hours. This usually means Old Town for the midnight stretch, with fireworks from the rooftops or from Piața Constituției if you want the official municipal display.
The trade-off here is logistics: ride-hailing surges, taxis disappear, walking is the safest plan. If you go this route, build your evening within walking distance — dinner, midnight venue and nightcap all in the same district.
3 · The long lounge evening
You skip both the formal-ballroom format and the loud-club format. Instead, you book a single venue that handles dinner, drinks, midnight and after-midnight as one continuous evening. The table stays yours. The room slows after midnight rather than emptying. Nobody asks you to move.
This is the format we built Komodo Lounge around, and it is the option a lot of returning guests pick when they have done the other two formats in past years and want a calmer New Year's Eve.
NYE at Komodo Lounge
We run both venues differently on December 31.
Komodo Lounge Old Town on Strada Șelari leans into the moment — Old Town is the most atmospheric district in the city at midnight, walking distance to the public fireworks if you want to step out, then back to the table. Eastern European brasserie dinner, shisha at the table, a long midnight. Capped capacity so the room stays comfortable.
Komodo Lounge Floreasca on Calea Floreasca is the quieter format — Bali-inspired villa, sushi-led dinner, signature cocktails, shisha for guests who want it, no public-square noise. Floreasca is also closer to the major hotels in the north of the city and to Henri Coandă airport if you arrived for the holidays.
Both venues run a fixed NYE menu with a guaranteed table for the full night. Reservation list opens late October — message us at reception@komodolounge.ro to be added when it does.
The fireworks question
The official Bucharest fireworks are launched from Piața Constituției, in front of the Palace of the Parliament, at midnight. The municipal event in the square itself draws large crowds — a free public concert, lots of cold, families, no seating. It is the right answer for some people and entirely wrong for others.
Most of the city is also lit at midnight by informal fireworks set off across every neighbourhood. From any terrace or upper-floor window, the sky fills regardless of where you are. If you want fireworks without the crowd, you do not need to be in Piața Constituției — you just need a window.
Practical NYE notes for Bucharest
- Book transport in advance. Ride-hailing apps (Bolt) surge heavily between 23:00 and 02:00. If you can build your night within walking distance of your hotel or apartment, do.
- Dress warmly. Late December in Bucharest is typically -2 to +4°C. If your plan includes any outdoor time at midnight, coats and boots make a difference.
- Cash for the night. Some smaller venues run cash-only NYE specials. Cards work in everywhere serious, but it is not the night to discover an exception.
- Pace yourself. NYE dinners in Bucharest are long. The first course often arrives later than booked time would suggest. Plan a light lunch.
- January 1 is quiet. Almost everything closes. If you are visiting, plan a slow morning and a 13:00–15:00 lunch at whatever stays open in your area.

Frequently asked questions
When should I book NYE in Bucharest?
By late October. The most popular restaurants and lounges fill their NYE reservation list weeks before December 31. Public-square events don't require booking, but everything sit-down does.
Where are the fireworks in Bucharest on New Year's Eve?
The official municipal fireworks are typically launched from Piața Constituției in front of the Palace of the Parliament. Smaller displays happen in other neighbourhoods, and informal fireworks fill the sky across the city at midnight.
What does NYE dinner cost in Bucharest?
Most restaurants offer a fixed NYE menu, typically priced between 400 and 1,000 RON per person depending on the venue. Lounges and bars usually have either an open menu with a cover charge or a special tasting menu format for the night.
Is it worth staying in for New Year's Eve in Bucharest?
For some, yes — Bucharest's biggest hotel restaurants put on serious NYE dinners. But the city is at its best when you go out: Old Town and the lounge scene make it easy to find a memorable evening without committing to a single ballroom.
